Description

Approach to Ankle Fractures

Objectives

Describe the essential anatomy of the ankle relevant to fracture patterns, including the malleoli, syndesmosis, and joint stability. • Classify ankle fractures using commonly applied systems (Weber, Lauge-Hansen) and interpret what each classification implies about mechanism and stability. • Perform a structured clinical assessment of an injured ankle, identifying red-flag features that need urgent attention. • Interpret ankle radiographs systematically and recognize signs of instability such as talar shift or syndesmotic injury. • Decide between conservative and operative management based on fracture pattern, displacement, soft-tissue condition, and patient factors. • Outline initial emergency management: analgesia, reduction principles, splinting, and when to avoid manipulation. • Discuss postoperative or post-immobilization follow-up, including weight-bearing timelines and complications to anticipate.
