Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focuses on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), a significant public health concern affecting individuals across all age groups. The session will provide a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, transmission dynamics, clinical presentations, and complications of common STDs, including bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. Participants will review evidence-based approaches to screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, including syndromic management and laboratory-supported diagnosis. The session will also address key issues such as antimicrobial resistance, partner notification, prevention strategies, and integration of STD services into primary and reproductive healthcare. Emphasis will be placed on patient-centered care, stigma reduction, confidentiality, and counseling, as well as the importance of early detection and timely intervention to reduce transmission and long-term complications.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Describe the epidemiology and transmission of common STDs, including bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. Recognize the clinical presentations and complications associated with major STDs. Apply syndromic and laboratory-based approaches to the diagnosis of STDs. Implement evidence-based treatment protocols, including appropriate antimicrobial use and management of drug resistance. Provide effective counseling on prevention strategies, including safe sexual practices, condom use, and vaccination where applicable (e.g., HPV, Hepatitis B). Conduct partner notification and contact tracing in a confidential and ethical manner. Integrate STD services into routine clinical care, including antenatal, postnatal, and HIV services. Promote stigma-free, patient-centered care to improve health-seeking behavior and treatment adherence.
