Description

This CME session focuses on improving the safe handling and disposal of sharps within the hospital environment through the implementation of a structured Sharps Management Policy. The activity will guide participants through the process of identifying gaps, developing interventions, and monitoring outcomes using Quality Improvement (QI) principles such as the SMART model and Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) cycle. Participants will review existing sharps management practices, analyze incident trends (such as needlestick injuries), and collaboratively develop strategies to minimize risks, ensure compliance with occupational safety standards, and enhance staff and patient safety.

Objectives

Describe the importance of safe sharps management and its impact on healthcare worker safety and quality of care. Identify the common causes and risk factors associated with sharps-related injuries in healthcare settings. Explain the key components of a comprehensive Sharps Management Policy, including segregation, collection, storage, and disposal. Apply Quality Improvement tools (SMART goals and PDSA cycle) to design, implement, and monitor a Sharps Management Policy in their respective departments. Demonstrate proper sharps handling and disposal techniques in accordance with hospital infection prevention and control standards. Evaluate the outcomes of sharps management interventions through data tracking (e.g., reduction in needlestick injuries) and reporting.
