Description

Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) is the formation of a blood clot within a deep vein, most commonly in the legs. It is a significant medical condition due to its risk of causing pulmonary embolism (PE) and post-thrombotic syndrome. DVT occurs when Virchow’s triad—venous stasis, endothelial injury, and hypercoagulability—leads to clot formation. Risk factors include prolonged immobility, surgery, trauma, cancer, pregnancy, obesity, and certain genetic conditions. Clinical presentation may include swelling, pain, redness, and warmth in the affected limb, although it can be asymptomatic. Diagnosis is often confirmed by duplex ultrasonography and D-dimer testing. Management involves anticoagulation, mechanical prophylaxis, and addressing underlying causes. Prevention is key in high-risk patients, especially in hospital settings.

Objectives

Define Deep Venous Thrombosis and explain its pathophysiology. Identify risk factors, causes, and predisposing conditions for DVT. Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of DVT and differentiate from other causes of leg swelling. Describe diagnostic approaches, including laboratory and imaging modalities. Discuss evidence-based management strategies, including anticoagulation therapy and mechanical interventions. Outline prevention strategies in high-risk patients, including both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic measures.
