Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session will provide healthcare providers with updated knowledge and practical skills in the safe practice of operative deliveries. The session will cover cesarean section (CS) techniques and indications, selection criteria for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), and ethical/legal aspects of informed consent in obstetric practice. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based decision-making, patient-centered care, and strategies to minimize maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality associated with operative deliveries.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Cesarean Section (CS) Identify the common indications for elective and emergency CS. Describe safe surgical techniques and perioperative care to reduce complications. Recognize and manage potential intraoperative and postoperative complications. Indications for Operative Delivery Differentiate between absolute and relative indications for CS. Apply evidence-based guidelines when deciding between operative vaginal delivery and CS. Balance maternal and fetal considerations when making delivery decisions. Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) Understand eligibility criteria and contraindications for VBAC. Counsel patients effectively on the risks and benefits of VBAC versus repeat CS. Implement monitoring protocols and intrapartum management strategies to optimize VBAC safety. Consent Taking Demonstrate effective communication skills in obtaining informed consent for operative delivery. Explain risks, benefits, alternatives, and possible complications of operative deliveries to patients and families. Understand the ethical and legal implications of consent in obstetrics, including emergency situations.
