Description
Preeclampsia symptoms can include high blood pressure, protein in the urine, and severe headaches. Other common signs are vision changes like blurred vision or seeing spots, swelling in the hands and face, upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, and shortness of breath. Some people may have no symptoms, so regular prenatal checkups are vital for detection
Objectives
Common symptoms
High blood pressure: Often detected during routine prenatal visits.
Protein in the urine: Also known as proteinuria, it indicates kidney problems.
Severe headaches: Headaches that are persistent and not relieved by medication can be a warning sign.
Vision changes: This can include blurred vision, seeing spots, or sensitivity to light.
Upper abdominal pain: Usually felt under the ribs on the right side.
Swelling (edema): Especially in the face and hands, which can cause rings to no longer fit. While some swelling is normal in pregnancy, sudden or severe swelling can be a sign of preeclampsia.
Sudden weight gain: Gaining more than 5 pounds in a week can be a symptom.
Nausea or vomiting: Particularly after the first trimester.
Shortness of breath: Caused by fluid building up in the lungs.
