Description

This CME session aims to enhance healthcare providers’ understanding of seizure disorders, including seizures, convulsions, and epilepsy. The session will focus on differentiating these conditions, exploring their underlying causes, clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and evidence-based management approaches. Participants will also learn about emergency care during convulsive episodes, long-term treatment strategies, and counseling techniques for patients and families. Through interactive discussions and case-based learning, the session seeks to improve patient outcomes and promote multidisciplinary management of epilepsy.

Objectives

Define and differentiate between seizure, convulsion, and epilepsy based on pathophysiology and clinical presentation. Identify common causes and risk factors associated with seizures and epilepsy across different age groups. Describe diagnostic approaches, including clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, and neuroimaging, to confirm seizure disorders. Demonstrate appropriate emergency management of a patient experiencing a convulsion, including airway protection and postictal care. Outline pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options for epilepsy and discuss principles of anti-epileptic drug selection and monitoring. Recognize when to refer patients for specialized care, including neurologist review or advanced diagnostic testing.
