Clinical Ethis Certificate Course

Description

The target for this course will be individuals involved in clinical research, teaching clinical subjects and any clinicians interested in expanding their knowledge on dealing with ethical dilemmas in practice.The training will involve presentations and interactive discussions led by a team of both local and international faculty.

1. Prof. Aamir Jafarey
   Prof. Jafarey joined the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation in Karachi-Pakistan, at its inception in October 2004 after training in bioethics as a Fogarty Fellow in the Department of Population and International Health, Harvard School of Public Health.

2. Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi
   Prof. Bukusi (ObGyn), MPH, PhD, PGD (Research Ethics), Masters in Bioethics, Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, earned her general medical degree and Masters in Obstetrics and Gynecology degree from the University of Nairobi.

3. Prof. Stephen Muhudhia
   Prof. Muhudhia is a specialist paediatrician in private practice based at The Nairobi Hospital. He is a visiting consultant pediatrician to Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, The Aga Khan University Hospital and M.P. Shah Hospital.

4. Dr. Pascal Mwakio
   Rev. Dr. Fr. Pascal Mwambi Mwakio is a Catholic priest from Mombasa Archdiocese since 2004. He holds Bachelor’s degree in Philosophical studies from Urbaniana University-Rome, Bachelor’s degree in theological studies, Masters and Doctorate degrees in Bioethics all from Regina Apostolurum University, Rome.

5. Miss Caroline Kithinji
   Ms. Kithinji is the head of training at the Scientific and Ethics Review Unit (SERU) of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). She has 17 years of experience in Research Ethics Committee (REC) administration and training. Sustainable growth is her passion. Training and mentoring young professionals in biomedical ethics and research ethics committee administration is her calling. Providing efficient and considered ethics review provides her with enormous gratification.

6. Miss Sualeha Shekhani
   Ms. Shekhani is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC). She holds an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from SZABIST (2014), with majors in Psychology. She joined CBEC as a part timer in March 2015 as a Research Assistant.

7. Prof. Walter Jaoko
   Prof. Walter Jaoko is a Physician, and Professor of Medical Microbiology and Tropical Medicine at University of Nairobi. He is also the Director of KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, also at the University of Nairobi.

8. Dr. Mary Adam
   Dr. Adam is a Visiting Professor at Strathmore University in the Institute for Health Management. She is a pediatrician working in medical education and public health based at AIC Kijabe Hospital, Kenya, where she is the Director of the Kijabe Maternal Newborn Community Health Project.

9. Dr. Amar Jesani
   Dr. Jesani is an independent researcher and teacher in bioethics and public health. He is a co-founder of the Forum for Medical Ethics Society and its journal, Indian Journal of Medical Ethics (www.ijme.in), published since 1993. He is its editor since 2012. He is also a co-founder of Anusandhan Trust (retired in 2013) and its institutions, CEHAT (Mumbai) & SATHI (Pune).

10. Dr. John Weru
    Dr. Weru is an Assistant Professor of Palliative Medicine at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH-N). He is the leader of the Palliative Care Team at the Hospital and the Chairperson of the East African Palliative Care Steering Committee charged with developing and setting up this service in the region.

11. Dr. Nida Wahid Bashir
    Dr. Bashir is a Consultant Breast and General Surgeon at Dr. Ziauddin Hospital, Clifton Campus, Karachi, Pakistan. She has received GB Ong Gold Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK. Her prime interest in the field of biomedical ethics is in medical error, particularly in the sphere of organizational ethics.

12. Dr. Mohamoud Merali
    Dr. Merali is Qualified in Medical Health Psychology (K) he has an MA in Counselling Studies (UK); Certified sychometrist for adults and children (SA) & is certified Hypnotherapist (SA). He has an honorary doctorate and is an Associate Professor with Selinus University in Italy.

13. Dr. Bushara Shirazi
    Dr. Shirazi is a Professor of Surgery working as a breast consultant at SIUT along with being a member faculty at the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC, SIUT). She has a Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics (2007) and MBE in Bioethics (2011) from the Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Karachi.

14. Miss Melba Katindi
    Ms. Katindi is an advocate of the high court of Kenya and the founder and managing partner of Katindi & Company Advocates; an up-andcoming law firm that offers human rights legal services and specialist development consultancy; servicing legally underserved communities, non-profits, government agencies and partners within the development context.

15. Mr. Allan Maleche
    Mr. Maleche is a dynamic leader, an advocate of the high court of Kenya and a human rights defender with over twelve years of experience in law, ethics, governance, policy, health and rights, including seven years managing rights-based programmes that protect affected, marginalized and vulnerable populations.

16. Dr. Natasha Anwar
    Dr. Natasha Anwar is a Consultant Molecular Pathologist at Aga Khan University and Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan. She did her doctorate in Infectious Diseases from Imperial College School of Medicine, University of London and is an alumnus of CBEC’s Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics. She also has a Master’s in Bioethics from CBEC, SIUT, Karachi, Pakistan. She is also an Associate faculty at CBEC.

17. Mr. Gideon Msee
