Dr. Angela Munoko is a full time Clinical Pathologist and her duties involve laboratory analysis, result interpretation and reporting. She is also part of the Quality assurance department bringing the clinical perspective and pathologist’s expertise to the team. She is the holder of a Master of Medicine ((MMed) in Clinical Pathology from the Aga Khan University, East Africa College, and a Master of Science in Tropical and Infectious diseases (MScTID) from the University of Nairobi. She is a firm believer in the importance of access to quality and accurate diagnostic testing and has a passion for sharing of knowledge for better health outcomes.

Introduction (15 minutes): Provide an overview of the blood as a diagnostic tool, introduce the peripheral blood film, and highlight its importance in clinical practice. Cellular Morphology (30 minutes): Present interactive lectures and high-quality visuals to clearly explain the morphology, function, and clinical significance of each major cell type in the peripheral blood (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets). Encourage questions and discussion. Clinical Applications (30 minutes): Discuss the use of the peripheral blood film in various clinical scenarios, including diagnosis of anemia, leukocytosis, leukopenia, and parasitic infections. Present case studies and interactive exercises to reinforce learning. Technical Aspects (20 minutes): Demonstrate smear preparation, staining techniques, and microscopic evaluation of the peripheral blood film. Encourage participants to ask questions and practice basic skills under supervision. Summary and Q&A (15 minutes): Briefly summarize key learning points and answer any remaining questions from participants.

Objectives

By the end of this CME activity, participants will be able to: Identify and describe the major types of cells found in the peripheral blood, including their morphology and function. Explain the clinical uses of the peripheral blood film in diagnosing various conditions, such as anemia, infection, inflammation, and leukemia. Demonstrate an understanding of the technical aspects of preparing and analyzing a peripheral blood film, including smear technique, staining procedures, and microscopic evaluation.

    Dr Charles M. Ngari is the Head of Clinical Pathology Services at Pathologists Lancet Kenya (PLK) since February February 2018 when he joined the company. Qualitfications Dr Charles Ngari is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, where he graduated with a Masters in Medicine in Human Pathology (MMed.Path) in December 2017. He has worked in hospitals in the country in various capacities providing services as both a general practitioner and specialist.
