Description
Definition of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) Disease caused by absence/inadequate production of pulmonary surfactant & related lung underdevelopment The disease is found mainly in preterm newborns (before 37 weeks gestation) Characterized by a progressive increase in respiratory effort and a decrease in the amount of air entering the lungs favoring hypoxia.

Approach to management
Keep warm and Maintain neutral thermal environment - Reduce oxygen consumption
Airway patency should be ensured
Breathing - Specific management; Surfactant use and Respiratory Support (CPAP)
Circulation- feeds and fluids; Initiation of early feeds & Maintenance fluids
D - Close monitoring of vitals; Blood sugars, Hypotension common in early RDS, Antibiotics, Caffeine
