Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers in the perioperative management of surgical patients, with a special focus on Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols. The session will cover evidence-based practices in pre-operative optimization, intraoperative considerations, and post-operative care strategies that reduce complications, shorten hospital stays, and improve patient outcomes. Emphasis will be placed on a multidisciplinary approach involving surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and nutritionists to ensure comprehensive perioperative care.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Pre-Operative Care Identify key components of pre-operative evaluation including risk stratification, optimization of comorbidities, and patient education. Discuss strategies to reduce surgical risk such as infection prevention, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, and nutritional support. Post-Operative Care Recognize principles of immediate and long-term post-operative care, including pain management, wound care, early mobilization, and complication monitoring. Apply evidence-based practices in preventing common post-operative complications (e.g., pneumonia, DVT, surgical site infections). Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Explain the core principles and protocols of ERAS in different surgical specialties. Integrate ERAS elements such as multimodal analgesia, fluid management, early enteral feeding, and mobilization into clinical practice. Evaluate outcomes associated with ERAS including reduced length of hospital stay, lower readmission rates, and improved patient satisfaction. Multidisciplinary Collaboration Demonstrate the importance of teamwork between surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and nutritionists in perioperative care. Develop strategies for implementing ERAS protocols in institutional settings.
