Description

Cord prolapse, also known as umbilical cord prolapse, is an obstetrical emergency that occurs when the umbilical cord drops in front of the baby and passes through the cervix. It can happen during labor or when the water breaks before labor starts.

Objectives

Cord prolapse is a concern because it can reduce blood flow and oxygen supply to the baby. The baby may need to be delivered immediately to prevent long-term harm or death. Risk factors for cord prolapse include: Preterm labor Low birth weight Having twins or multiples Having previous children A low-lying placenta A long umbilical cord Prolonged labor Some cases of cord prolapse occur without any outward symptoms. One study estimates that more than half of prolapses happen within five minutes of the water breaking.
