Description

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication of diabetes characterized by hyperglycemia, ketosis, and metabolic acidosis. Fluid therapy is the cornerstone of initial management, aimed at restoring circulatory volume, correcting dehydration, improving renal perfusion, and aiding the clearance of ketones. This session will provide an evidence-based overview of fluid therapy in DKA, including fluid choice, dosing strategies, electrolyte considerations, and adjustments for special populations such as children and patients with comorbidities.

Objectives

-To explain the pathophysiological role of fluid loss in the development and progression of DKA. -To identify appropriate types of intravenous fluids for initial resuscitation and ongoing replacement in DKA. -To apply current guidelines to determine fluid volume, rate, and composition based on patient parameters (age, electrolytes, comorbidities).
