Description

-Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a temporary mechanical support system that provides cardiac and/or respiratory assistance by circulating blood through an external artificial lung that removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen before returning the blood to the patient.

Objectives

-To provide adequate oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal in patients with severe respiratory failure.
