Description

suicide risk assesment: recognising , assessing and responding to risk

Objectives

Identify the common risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors associated with suicidal behaviour. Recognise clinical presentations associated with increased suicide risk, including suicidal ideation, intent, planning, and previous suicide attempts. Conduct a structured and compassionate suicide risk assessment, including direct questioning about suicidal thoughts, plans, intent, access to means, and previous attempts. Evaluate relevant psychosocial, psychiatric, and medical factors that may increase an individual's risk of suicide. Formulate an individualized clinical risk assessment using information from the patient, collateral sources, and the clinical examination. Implement immediate safety measures for patients at risk of suicide, including appropriate observation, environmental safety, and restriction of access to potentially lethal means. Develop an individualized management and safety plan, including crisis support, involvement of appropriate support persons, and timely mental health referral. Determine indications for emergency psychiatric evaluation, hospital admission, and escalation of care when clinically necessary. Describe appropriate documentation, communication, follow-up, and continuity-of-care measures for patients presenting with suicide risk. Demonstrate a non-judgmental, empathetic, and culturally sensitive approach to discussing suicide and supporting affected individuals.
